At The Movies…Pretentious Style

One usually thinks of film critics as the vanquishers of masala films and purveyors of the more subtle arts and thus they end up being hated for their constant whip lashing of movie stars (cum demigods). However, here’s one duo that everyone seems to love. They’re funny, they trash films that are beyond trashy, give them bizarre titles/awards (which, is a part of trashing :|) and make the reviews seem funnier than the movies themselves are.

Introducing (*cue music*) Pretentious Movie Reviews- A new take on the silliest movies in recent history, featuring engineers turned stand up comedians Kanan Gill (of “Bangalore on Politics’ and ‘Mumbai on Bollywood’ fame) and Biswa Kalyan Rath (the guy went to IIT. And does comedy. All hail). The basic premise of the videos, as is already mentioned, is to give a hilarious review of certain godforsaken films that have tortured audiences, by highlighting certain facets of the film which most of us common mortals would’ve missed. What makes it all the better is the straight faces they maintain while doing so, and the sketches that that present at the end of the review. They have so far taken down Gunda, Jaani Dushman, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, Aap Ka Suroor and Aabra Ka Daabra with much aplomb…

Gunda: This Mithun Chakraborty starrer was considered ‘The Best Movie In The World’, for instances of characters introducing themselves in rhymes (check Ibu Hatela-banana enthusiast, in mud and slime :P), mentioning the reason why they were murdering people, and the best baby catch, which involves Mithun Chakraborty doing somersaults like a pro (he should audition for India’s Got Talent), among other reasons.

Jaani Dushma-Ek Anokhi Kahaani: This Anokhi Kahaani, which happens to be the launch vehicle for Sonu Nigam and ex-Bigg Boss contestant Armaan Kohli, was ‘lauded’ for its ‘commendable’ special effects, which got it the coveted title of ‘Best Visual Effects Ever’, a song whose raison d’être is ‘come’ and scenes copied from ‘the matrix’ series. Other highlights mentioned, include people throwing parties for no reason and Sonu Nigam’s brilliant acting.

Main Prem Ki Deewaani Hoon: Riding on a wave of enthusiasm this Kareena Kapoor- Hrithik Roshan-Abhishek Bachchan starrer, was appreciated for its “more acting per unit area than you’ve ever seen”, best solution to every problem in life(trust me, you wanna know this one), A fantastic –absolutely-gravity-defying-flying- dad, and explanation of obvious facts, such as a cap with ‘DAD’ embroidered on it to signify that Pankaj Kapoor plays Kareena’s father, which oddly reminds you of Bhagyashree’s ‘FRIEND’ cap from Maine Pyaar Kiya (*cue* Kabootar Ja Ja Ja).

Aap Ka Suroor: Himesh-bhai Reshammiya’s debut film in which he played the ‘challenging’ role of Himesh Reshammiya (bleh), consisted of innumerable references about Germany, Mallika Sherawat as Germany’s top lawyer-cum bellydancer (*cue* nasalized Mehbooba Mehbooba), the luckiest girl in the world and German cops with Australian accent, among other quirks.

Aabra Ka Daabra: Harry Potter’s desi version, is the latest on the review radar. The main focus of the video is on a character pegged as the ‘unimpressed sardar kid’, who could pretty much be regarded as the star of the film! Apart from that the films also scores on grounds of great product placement, whereby Parle-G is seen almost everywhere (the film was lampooned ‘Most Parle-G Ever’), and the Hansika-Himesh combo. Luckily this time, the film released before Himesh’s ‘suroor’ days and Hansika plays the role of a young magician in the film, while Himesh sticks to music direction.
