It is a nerve-wracking time for fans also called ‘ARMYs’ of the global superband BTS with the Grammy 2020 nominations just a day away.

On 20th November 2019 the Grammy nominees will be unveiled and the fans of the band are waiting with bated breath to finally know if their artists have been nominated in any category or not.

For those still unaware of who BTS is here is a quick refresher course about them. BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan/Beyond The Scene is a South Korean band including 7 members namely: RM (Kim Namjoon), Suga (Min Yoongi), J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), Jin (Kim Seokjin), Jimin (Park Jimin), V (Kim Taehyung) and Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook).

While they made their debut in 2013, 2019 has been one of the most explosive year for the group with them selling out stadium concerts across the world that had over 90,000 seats.

Not just that but BTS also became the first foreign artist to hold a solo stadium show in Saudi Arabia. They had a sold-out show at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh in October this year.

All this coupled with how they attended the Grammy award show last year and presented an award, has made many fans curious if the group would bag any nomination at one of the most prestigious music award show.

Should BTS Be Nominated?

To be honest, considering their accomplishments in this year alone, it would not be that far off to want at least one nomination for the band.

In September 2019 it was revealed that their EP Map of the Soul: Persona that came out on April 12, 2019, had sold over 4 million copies worldwide organically which means without bundling. This feat is made more special since not only are they are the first artist of 2019 to have done so but that they did it in just 6 months of their album being released.

The album was also certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

This made BTS get three No. 1 albums on the chart within a year, something that only one other group had done before, The Beatles.

Their lead single ‘Boy With Luv’ was also certified platinum by the RIAA, becoming their second song to do so and making BTS the only South Korean group to have multiple songs certified platinum.

Apart from this, seventeen BTS songs have charted No.1 on the World Digital Song Sales with 7 of them being from their Map of the Soul: Persona album and BTS World: Original Soundtrack.

Not just in their music, but BTS has also gained a lot of acclaim with their sold-out concerts. BTS’s May 2019 concerts were said to be the No. 1 top-grossing tour and in June they sold out all their shows at the Wembley Stadium.

What Can They Be Nominated For?

As per Grammy regulations, an artist must have released music between October 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019, to be eligible for a nomination.

Thankfully, BTS has a lot of music under their name during this period with their Map of the Soul: Persona album, its lead single “Boy With Luv,” featuring Halsey and the Japanese single “Lights” being the most obvious choices for a Grammy consideration.

Last year BTS’s album ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ got a nomination for Best Recording Package. However, in this case, it was the designers of the album package that were the main nominees and not BTS themselves.

As per a source, these are some of the categories that BTS could be considered for:

Album of the Year for Map of the Soul: Persona and Mono

Record of the Year for “Boy With Luv,” “Lights,” and “Heartbeat”

Song of the Year for “Boy With Luv,” “Lights,” and “Heartbeat”

Best Pop/Duo Group Performance for “Boy With Luv” ft. Halsey, “Lights,” and “Heartbeat”

Best Pop Vocal Album for Map of the Soul: Persona

Best Music Video for “Boy With Luv,” “Lights,” and “Heartbeat”

Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for BTS World: Original Soundtrack

According to Billboard BTS and Big Hit Entertainment, their agency have entered their single “Boy With Luv” for the following categories:

  • Best Pop/Duo Group Performance
  • Record of the Year
  • Song of the Year

The main album has also been submitted for the Album of the Year award category.

What Are The Fans Feeling About This?

So far the ARMY fanbase is mostly in a tense atmosphere where they are simply awaiting November 20th to really react in any manner.

However, one thing I did notice was how it is being repeatedly stressed that fans do not react in a negative manner if BTS doesn’t secure any nomination.

Fans are mostly gearing up for that scenario while hoping for the best. This is because a nomination for a boyband, that Grammys have often snubbed, that releases music majorly in the Korean language, a non-English section, would be a huge win for diversity.

But at the same time, ARMYs are preparing in case they don’t get nominated and posting, again and again, to not behave in a rude or negative manner.

Instead, fans are being told that even if BTS don’t get nominated then it would just be another goal for next year. They are being encouraged to focus their energy towards a more productive goal and not start fan-wars of any kind.

Along with this, fans are also glad about the inclusion of BTS into the Grammy Museum. The outfits they wore at the 2019 award show have been included in the museum and are a testament to their achievements.

In the meantime, though we are just keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that BTS is given a reward for their accomplishments and do get a Grammy nomination tomorrow.
