2019 is coming to an end. It has been an eventful year and with this blog, let us take a look at the various events that took place in 2019 which made it the most happening year of the decade.

1. A Year Of Patriotic And Political Movies

2019 was a year of some exceptional movies including those based on political and patriotic themes.

Looking at the increased number of movies that Bollywood is producing while keeping in mind the patriotic and political sentiments of the country, memers found yet another topic on which they could try their creativity.

Memes on actors like Akshay Kumar and John Abraham trying to fetch scripts of movies on political and patriotic background trended on the internet.

Some patriotic and propaganda based movies released this year were:

Uri: The Surgical Strike– starring Vicky Kaushal

The Accidental Prime Minister- starring Anupam Kher

Mission Mangal- starring Akshay Kumar

2. A Year of Major Constitutional Amendments

The year saw a number of constitutional amendments, with the Modi-led Union Government showing no hesitation in doing so.

The media and public opinion remained divided on these constitution-changing-decisions however; the government still went ahead with them. Some of them invited great uproar from the affected parties.

Landmark changes made in the constitution are:-

Enactment of Citizenship Amendment Bill

Removal of Article 370 from the Constitution of India

10% Reservation for Economically Weaker Sections of Society

3. A Year Devoid of Women Safety

Women safety does not seem to be on the agenda of any political party and 2019 was a year in which India witnessed a downfall in the character of men, making it difficult for women to even so much as walk on roads.

Several rape cases were registered in the year and the ones which gained great media attention were:

Hyderabad Rape Case

Unnao Rape and Murder Case

4. A Year of Awareness on Climate Change

Climate change is an issue which wasn’t addressed with due diligence earlier. The year of 2019 brought forth the various harmful effects of climate change like the Fire in the Amazon Rainforest, Fire in the Australian Forests and Melting of Glaciers.

In Mumbai, the felling of trees in Aarey Forest attracted immense media attention and people protested against the environmental degradation that was taking place in the name of development.

If this was not enough, the Times’ Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg emphasized enough on this issue and got the required media attention, thus bringing the issue in conversation.

5. A Year of Decisiveness and Dispute Resolution

2019 has been a year when the judicial authorities worked proactively to give decisions on various important matters.

In continuation with the spirit shown by the judiciary in 2018, the Hon’ble Supreme Court pronounced decisions in cases of:-

Ayodhya Case

Rafale Deal Case

Case filed against Rahul Gandhi filed by Meenakshi Lekhi (Contempt of Court)

6. A Year of Freedom from Terrorism and Political Bondage

2019 saw the peak of terrorist activities. Many countries including India were targeted and some of the attacks were successful as well.

However, these activities only furthered the intent of world leaders to get rid of terrorism. In one of these attempts, Abu Bakr-Al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS was killed by US, thus ending the era of terror in Syria and nearby countries.

To combat and eradicate terrorism, India conducted a successful air strike on terrorist training camps in Pakistan.

As far as political bondage is concerned, people all around the globe were found aggrieved by government policies and they protested against them, be it in Iran, Chile, Hong Kong or India.

In India, Kashmir saw a prolonged lockdown and non-access to the Internet facilities and this practice was also used to curb uproar in parts of Assam.

2019 was a bitter-sweet year. This year will go down in history not only for marking the end of this decade but also for the events it witnessed. Many of these events are likely to shape the coming year and its destiny.

Happy New Year? Amm…time will tell.
