BTS, the 7 member South Korean band has been on a rollercoaster for the past 2 years, with breaking records and adding achievements upon achievements into their bag.

Very recently, they joined the elite group of global artists like Beyonce, Rihanna, Queen, Eminem, and more to perform at a sold-out concert at the Wembley Stadium in London.

Not only were that, but they were also the first Korean artists to perform at one of the biggest stadium in the whole of UK.

BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan/ Beyond The Scene) comprising of members RM (Kim Namjoon), Jin (Kim Seokjin), Suga (Min Yoongi), J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), Park Jimin, V (Kim Taehyung) and Jung Jungkook, performed to an approximate 120,000 people over the course of 2 dates for their stadium world tour extension, Love Yourself: Speak Yourself.

And now, they have added another achievement, by becoming joining the 2019 class at the Recording Academy.

Member Of Recording Academy?

As per reports, the band was invited to join the Recording Academy that will eventually be choosing the winners to the prestigious Grammy Awards.

They are among 1300 other artists, music professionals, writers and more to become the members of the Academy based in Los Angeles.

This move comes as a way to diversify the class and bring more representation of different types of music and artists.

Not just BTS, but even the CEO of their label Big Hit Entertainment, Bang si-Hyuk, has been invited but as a professional member, essentially meaning he won’t be able to vote.

The Recording Academy has taken other steps to make the class more inclusive, by having around 49% women and 51% of artists under the age of 40 join the class of 2019.

With this new membership, the members of BTS will now have the privilege to vote for the upcoming Grammy Awards 2020, which is considered to be one of the highest honors in the music industry.

What Does It Mean For BTS?

The Grammy and BTS relationship has been on for some time now, in 2018, they had a special one on one talk at the Grammy Museum.

Then in 2019, their album, “Love Yourself” Tear” was nominated for the Best Recording Package. The band even came to present one of the awards, becoming one of the first Korean artists to do so.

This membership thus, is just another step towards BTS establishing themselves as serious artists and not just as some trend that is going to pass or a one act wonder.

Their acceptance into the Recording Academy is also proof that the American or global music circuit is now looking at them as artists instead of just a phenomenon, since approval into the class is quite difficult.

The Academy receives a lot of applications for membership from various artists and music industry people.

The artists usually selected as members of the Academy are those who have sold and streamed their albums in US, and are actively creating music.

Also this membership is not one that will last a lifetime, it has be renewed every year, with a $100 fee.

Some ARMYs are wondering whether the upcoming mandatory military enlistment of the members could be an obstacle to this.

However, the membership will expire only if the artist has not been active for 5 or more years in the industry. Since the standard military period for Korean artists is just for 2 years, this should not be a problem for BTS.
