Naranathu Bhranthan is a famous character from the popular folklore of Kerala. His name literally translates to the ‘Mad Man of Naranam,’ in Malayalam.

Why was he considered mad in the first place? His eccentric attitudes, carefree life, disregard for almost all social norms, etc., were a few reasons.

Even though he was the subject of many jokes during his time in this world, today, he is celebrated as one of the most enlightened intellectuals to have lived in Kerala.

Naranathu Bhranthan and his intellect is celebrated so much that now the town of Pattambi in Palakkad, where he is believed to have lived, houses a giant statue in his honour.
