US Open 2015: The Good, The Bad And The Pleasantly Surprising

-

The US Open is my least favourite Grand Slam. The reason is much too obvious.

Live streaming comes through the dark and lonely night hours and the choice between sleep and tennis is one I hate making. More often than not, currency serves its second purpose as one-too-many coin tosses make the life threatening decision.

Regardless of what it is though, you will be jetlagged; either you or your heart.

Whether we caught it in the late hours with a blanket and some snacks, or in the early ones with bread and juice, coffee was a constant companion and food wasn’t the only thing we were served.

Let’s review the last fortnight and all the aces, faults and breaks it served!

Sometimes sport goes according to plan…

On Point:

  • A Federer Djokovic final is a dream final. Post that, as the quote goes, “All is fair in love and war”; love for the game and war of arguably two of the best players the game has ever seen.
  • Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis bag another slam in style! This time they spared us of the nail-biting heart-stopping drama and for that we will be eternally grateful.
  • The delightful pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis won the mixed doubles with calm and composure amidst big smiles. It’s true what they say; “Old is gold.”

And sometimes it doesn’t…

Game Set Mismatch:

  • Nadal was knocked out of the Open in the third round. Murray crashed out in the fourth round. Big four, no more?
  • Seeded 1 Serena Williams and seeded 2 Simona Halep both lost out in the semi-finals. Ironic and unfortunate that Williams wins all three slams of the year, and missed out on the one in her home town. After all, the crowd gathered to see her.

But it always gives us something to talk about…

Breaking News:

  • Flavia Pennetta won the Women’s Singles title, winning her first Grand Slam! Moments after she held her trophy, she announced her retirement from the game. And why not, for she had finally got what she had set out for years ago.

I did mention that this one was my least favourite Grand Slam of the four. But I would take my words back if the wait till January could be taken away…

Until then, I guess we have got a lot to talk about, ponder over, and look forward to!
