In December 2015, Parties to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) signed an agreement called the Paris Climate Accord or the Paris Agreement, in order to combat climate change across the world and to take measures adhering to intensify steps needed to be taken for a sustainable low carbon future.

United States President Donald Trump recently pulled USA out of this accord, and has blamed India, China and Russia for the action.

1) “No Sense Of Cleanliness”

As quoted by The Daily Star, Trump said, “China, India, Russia, many other nations, they have not very good air, not very good water, and the sense of pollution and cleanliness”.

I would like to make a point here. This pollution and climate change, is not the result of recent wrong doings of humans. It is a result of every step of development that we have taken starting from the industrial revolution.

Developed countries like USA have moved ahead very quickly and have significantly contributed to the dreadful levels of carbon constituents in the atmosphere in the past.

Now that developing nations are trying to move forward, and the climate is already highly messed up, powered people like Trump might find it very convenient to blame the developing nations for pollution.

2) The Political Game

President Donald Trump also stated that America is among the cleanest climates that there are. World Health Organization reports state otherwise. America is still one of the top listed countries with degraded climatic conditions.

In his three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump said he had a 90-minute conversation with Prince Charles which was actually supposed to be a 15-minute casual chat. In the conversation, he appreciated the Prince on how much he cared for the environment.

“He wants to have a good world for the future generations and I want that too.” Should we take this as actual appreciation for the Prince of Wales or should be think of this as a political move for a big future plan?

3) Mighty Miser

It just seems like President Trump is reluctant to give any money to help other nations develop when he said, “India is a developing nation. China is too. But the United States? We’re developed, so we can pay!”

Trump frowned upon India and other developing nations taking billions in foreign aid from developed nations.

This is not the first time that he has blamed India for climate degradation and pollution. Yes, India has a very high level of pollution, but we’re doing everything we can to tackle it.

Several states have established carbon emission levels, issued electric vehicle tenders and India has one of the highest number of environmental protection/conservation organizations and NGOs.

Pulling out of the Paris Accord will not help. Blaming developing nations will not help. Stopping foreign aid money will definitely not help. So instead of playing the blame game, if leaders of this world tried to actually find solutions, we can really have a better future.

It speaks volumes about the quality of the leader, especially the President of the United States of America, when he backs out of a community that was set up to tackle what he is blaming other nations for.
