As Indian millennial, most of us have longed to pursue a career of our own choice, which is often in conflict with our families’ interests. Most engineering and medical students will second this thought.

While we still dream of even talking to our parents of our dreams, a university in Italy has launched a very new and unconventional degree programme.

Tell me if I’m wrong – all our parents, at some point our lives, have scolded us for using our mobiles too much, and mostly, what we do is scroll through social media feed.

Fun fact, on an average, the length a person with a smartphone scrolls through their newsfeed on Instagram or Facebook is equal to the height of Statue of Liberty every single day.

Now, what if I told you that this can be a degree? You read it right, scrolling through social media and studying your favourite influencers can be a part of a professional course.

The Social Media Influencer Degree

University eCampus of Italy is now providing a three-year degree programme to help regular Instagrammers hone their skills and become top influencers.

As reported by Bloomberg, the degree aims to fill the current educational gap. The website of the university says the degree is aimed at helping students gain the necessary technical skills to pursue a proper career as a social media influencer.

Influencer or influencing commonly refers to fashion-based influencers and social media celebrities. They have access to a large audience and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity and reach.

This university is an online university, which also provides a lot of conventional courses like engineering, law, and arts. It aims to teach influencers to build a following enough to earn out of it and make it a profession.

The Big Picture

Very recently, Chiara Ferragni, the most famous Italian Influencer, tweeted about a documentary based on her life with premier dates. It has become the most-watched docu-film in the country and made about $1.76 million in revenue.

University eCampus and the Influencer degree gained maximum attention due to football player and public figure Cristiano Ronaldo, who endorsed the degree, promoted it and the university has sought to grant 36 students funds to attain the degree.

Morning Brew reported that an influencer management platform called Traackr found 72% of major brands across the world are spending a lot of money on marketing through influencers and this entire arena is projected to earn $2.4 billion this year.

For those of us who are addicted to social media, here is a degree that can save us from being scolded for using the phone. That can be turned into a career very soon.

The process of becoming an influencer should not be undermined. But it is something different and can earn you a lot of money – more than your jobs might ever get you.
