The Cauvery water sharing dispute has reached its tipping point in Tamil Nadu because of the central government’s unwillingness to frame a scheme for sharing the river’s water as per the Supreme Court’s order.
The Southern state has witnessed massive protests, which has led to Indian Premier League matches of Chennai Super Kings being shifted out of Chennai to Pune.
What Actually Happened During The IPL Match?
A couple of miscreants in the IPL match between Kolkata and Chennai were detained by the police for hurling a shoe at Ravindra Jadeja amidst the match who was stationed at long-on in the eighth over in the first half of the match.
Moreover, it is well known that the match had been preceded by massive protests from various pro-Tamil activist groups due to Cauvery water dispute.
As reported by Business Standard, twenty-one Naam Tamilar Katchi party workers were arrested and sent to Puzhal Central Prison, a day after they created nuisance outside the Chepauk Stadium, in order to disrupt IPL matches to be held in the city.
Copious cases have also been registered against lyricist Vairamuth, director P Bharathiraja, MLA Karunas and hundreds of other protesters.
Why Was Pune Selected As The New Host City?
As stated by TOI, Pune has been chosen as the host city for the future matches of CSK because Dhoni knows the conditions well and logistically it made sense to have Pune as the new venue instead of any other city.
“There are only a few direct flights available from Vizag. If the team has to travel to Indore, then they had to reach Indore via Delhi. Pune has better connectivity, so it was decided that CSK shift base to Pune,” an IPL source said.
“The matches had to be shifted out of Chennai as police had said that they were unable to provide security in the prevailing situation. CSK is not averse to shifting base to Pune,” IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said.
Why Are The Protests Taking Place?
A six-week deadline was set by the apex court to come up with a scheme to implement the order of water sharing resources of Cauvery river between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu primarily.
Cauvery, as we all know, is vital for both the states in terms of agriculture. When the deadline was about to end, the BJP ruled government sought a clarification on the scheme and wanted three months to implement it. This led to wide protests in the state of Tamil Nadu whose leaders and people had hoped that the scheme would be finalized within the given period.
It is a no-brainer that due to the upcoming elections to the Karnataka Assembly, BJP did not want to lessen its chances by announcing anything which might lower its prospects in Karnataka which is currently run by Congress.
The protests have given way to #GoBackModi posters and disrupted the most loved sport in Tamil Nadu. We can only hope that everything gets resolved as soon as possible.
