Tata Revotron 1.2T: Turbocharged petrol engine

-

Tata Motors have recently launched an all-new turbocharged petrol engine series, named Revotron. The first engine in the Revotron engine series is a 1.2 liter Turbocharged petrol engine or Revotron 1.2T, which will be powering the soon to be launched Falcon 4 hatchback and Falcon 5 sedan. (Both Falcon 4 and Falcon 5 are codenames as the commercial names are yet to be revealed). Nowadays the Indian market is mainly favoring diesel engines, so it’s quite a bold move by Tata Motors to develop and launch an all-new petrol engine. Moreover we don’t usually see automobile manufacturers launch their engines separately and individually, so the Revotron engine seems to be quite important for Tata Motors, just like what the K-series is to Maruti Suzuki. It surely is a proud moment as it is the first in-house turbocharged motor developed by an Indian car manufacturer.

The Revotron 1.2T engine is quite revolutionary as it has individual components from Bosch, Honeywell and Mahle with and has been developed with inputs from AVL(Anstalt für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen List). It is a 1193cc, four cylinder, 8 valve engine with a turbocharger and multi-point fuel injection. In addition to that it has a water-cooled intercooler and importantly a cast iron head which will be more reliable in the long run. It also sports features such as multiple driving modes, smart ECU, a new catalytic converter(with lesser emissions), stiffened crankcase and 8-holed fuel injectors. The Revotron 1.2T engine develops 84bhp of power at 5,000rpm and a healthy 140Nm of torque at 1,750-3,500rpm. Yes, this is actually quite less when compared to similar engines such as Volkswagen’s 1.2L Tsi engine which develops 103bhp or even Ford’s 1.0L 3-cylinder ecoboost engine which develops around 125bhp. But Tata Motor Engineers have worked to create a balance between performance, drivability and fuel economy, though looking at the figures it’s obvious that the engine is more inclined to have better drivability and fuel economy. Another plus point is that the engine is also CNG capable thus it will attract Taxi operators.

So to conclude the Revotron motor looks very good on paper, and is probably one of the best 1.2L Petrol engines for Tata Motors. Let’s hope that they put in the same type of commitment and development into their future products like the Falcon 4 which is expected to be revealed at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo and will be the first Tata motors vehicle with this engine.
