Watch: Smita Patil Donated Her National Award Money To Charity: Things You Didn’t Know About Her

She always promoted the idea of films being made on women with strong personalities who change the way society thinks.

Spotted by Shyam Benegal, Smita Patil, one of the most highly acclaimed actresses of Hindi cinema went on to star in movies like Arth, Bhumika, Mandi, Manthan and commercial successes like Namak Halal etc.

Despite being a leading icon of parallel cinema owing to her fine acting skills, Smita Patil never had any qualms about doing a commercial film. In fact, she never liked people judging her choices. She always promoted the idea of films being made on women with strong personalities who change the way society thinks.

In her short span as an actress, Patil scored two National awards and a Filmfare award for Hindi cinema and one each for Marathi films. In 1985 she became the recipient of the Padma Shri.

On 13th December 1986 she died due to childbirth complications.
