If you think of underrated actors in Bollywood there is no dearth of names that will instantly pop up.

Because apparently if you are actually a good actor doing sensible movies with an actual plot and not just commercial nonsense, chances are you will be severely overlooked unless Hollywood notices the performance or by a long shot it really appeals to the mass audience.

However, there is a growing change where slowly but surely actors that were earlier underrated are finally being noticed, like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Irrfan Khan, Rajkumar Rao and more with even their indie movies doing well on a commercial level.

But there is one actor that is still going unnoticed by the audience at large and that would be Ronit Roy, the guy who struck fear in all of us young kids with the portrayal of an abusive father in Udaan.

Let us take a look at how Roy is an actor who really deserves our attention:

1. Had His Fair Share Of Failures

Although Roy had a brilliant debut in Bollywood with the hit 1992 movie Jaane Tere Naam, unfortunately, a slew of flops after that almost got him written out of the industry as a one-hit wonder.

However, Roy did not give up easily and took up whatever work came his way, even if it meant television.

Many wouldn’t understand now how big of a demotion it meant for an actor then to go from Bollywood to television which wasn’t as big as it is today. But the deep voice actor still, in a bid to continue his passion of acting, took up the offer by Balaji Telefilms and did a guest appearance in the extremely popular show Kasauti Zindagi Ki as the now, iconic character of Rishabh Bajaj.

The character was extremely popular with the audience and it bagged Roy several other lead roles in other shows.

2. Worked On His Acting

Over the years, it truly shows how intelligent and perceptive the actor is in understanding where his strengths lie and where is he weak at.

It is always great to see an actor who does not try to fit into the same mould of romantic hero of Bollywood who will sing and dance with the heroine, get beaten up and ride off into the sunset.

Instead, Roy created his own niche of the strong and silent man with his TV characters and used the medium of television very well in honing his acting skills and also building a fan base that would be loyal to him.

3. Doesn’t Ask For Attention

Ronit Roy is one of the few actors who has been able to juggle their television and film career well and instead of jumping back into Bollywood after getting a bit of success on TV, the actor spent almost 2 decades on the small screen with occasional guest work in a film here and there.

Instead of asking for attention, the underrated actor kept on doing his work and very smartly picked his Bollywood projects.

He let his roles speak for themselves and the truth is, that even in a minor role, he has managed to capture the attention of the audience very well.

Whether it be as an abusive alcoholic father in Udaan, an inspector in Lucknow Central or a ruthless villain in Kaabil, his performance has always left us spellbound.

4. Does Not Overact

Perhaps the most important point and the one that really brings out his talent as an actor is his ability to show emotions in just the right capacity.

In Kaabil as the villain, you really were afraid of him and to be honest, his performance was much better than even Hrithik Roshan in certain places.

Because even though Roshan is a relatively good actor, he is extremely bad at emoting anger and thinks that shaking the head like a bell or ghanta will properly show the extent of his emotions.

Roy, on the other hand, shows a more subdued and realistic version of showing emotions that we all know and have felt at some point in our life.

Also, his ability to bring shades of grey to his character and add some depth and twist to them is not often seen.

We love you for your controlled acting, Ronit. Keep going!
