Madonna’s Cape-Gate: A Fine Addition to The Stumbling Diairies

-

How many times have you read interviews where the question “What is your fashion style ?” is met with a “anything comfortable” response. It’s a cliché because it’s true. But most of our celebs fail to follow their own voice of logic. In an attempt to look glamorous, they let their designers run wild. The most recent victim of the trend was Madonna.

Madonna was making her triumphant return to the BRIT Awards (Britain’s answer to Grammy’s) stage after 20 years, when she performed on the annual television show in front of stars including Prince and Oasis. During a performance of her latest single ‘Living For Love’, the pop icon appeared to be dragged off stage by her Armani cape – landing with a thud.

She was left stunned by the incident but with more than three decades in the business, it didn’t appear to affect her performance.

She was quick to reassure fans that she was ‘fine’ in the midst of their concern and even praised the beauty of her specially-designed Armani cape. The singer said: ‘Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight. But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I’m fine! #livingforlove’

Stars followed up on social media, full of praise for the star’s perseverance after watching her press on -even though she was visibly shaken, while the internet had a field day, showing its humorous take on the whole incident. #capegate instantly started trending and a lot of people joked on the fate of the unfortunate backup dancer in charge of pulling the cape.  And to top it all off, Madonna’s Cape, yes, her cape, has its own Twitter account with over 4,770 followers.

In the upcoming episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, which will be aired in mid-March, Madonna got talking about the fall.

‘I didn’t hurt my butt, I hurt my head. I did. I know how to fall, I’ve fallen off my horse many times and I tucked and I have good core strength,’ she explained. ‘But the thing is, I had a little bit of a whiplash and I smacked the back of my head so there was a man standing over me with a flashlight until about 3 am making sure that I was still compos mentis.’

‘It was a horrible nightmare because I like to be amazing. Seriously I rehearse and I rehearse and I rehearse so that when I do the show, it’s effortless and I create magic and I did the opposite. I actually created a horror show for everyone,’ she joked.

But Madge’s cape-gate(that’s what its being called) incident isn’t the only one. Which brings me to my reason for writing this article. The recent past has seen fashion bring various ladies down to their knees( literally) and below are 3 gorgeous ladies taking a stumble due to complicated or in some cases not complicated dresses even.

1. Naomi Campbell

In 1993, super-model Naomi Campbell walked the ramp for Vivienne Westwood. The catwalk was stunning and so was the stumble. What human can be expected to walk straight in those heels ? Models falling at the runway, due to a malfunction, are a dime a dozen, but no fall has been able to match the Naomi loaded cuteness factor. I mean look at that bashful smile. How can you not make an automatic ‘awww’ sound.

2. Jennifer Lawrence

In 2013, Jennifer Lawrence made contact with the hallowed steps of the Dolby theatre when she went to accept a best female actor Oscar, for her turn in Silver Linings Playbook. “You guys are only standing up because I just fell and that’s really embarrassing,” she said to a sympathetic audience.

3. Jennifer Garner

Maybe it’s a Jennifer thing, because as Jennifer Garner walked down the red carpet at Academy Awards 2013, she tripped over her purple gown. Maybe all those ruffles weighed her down.

4. Jennifer Lawrence (AGAIN)

And then a feat, only J-Law could achieve. A year after her first trip up to the Oscars podium, J-Law stumbled on the 2014 Oscars red carpet after she failed to spot a safety cone. “They shouldn’t have those laying around, I’m the same colour as a cone,” she said in an interview. Basically, she should not be left alone in long dresses and such killer heels. And Jennifer Lawrence has proven that only she can make stumbling and falling a fashion trend.

So take a leaf from their books, dress comfortable, and avoid yourself the embarrassment of such falls, because we’re just as clumsy as they are, but might not be able to pull a fall with such grace. I mean, look at their faces, they’re all smiles ! We can all laugh at them when they fall, it’s a very natural reaction, and very easy to do so, but kudos to them for holding their front and exuding such effervescence.

The one thing these ladies share in common, apart from their obvious run-ins with fashion, is that they all chose to laugh off the incidents, and get going with the show. They didn’t let their falls get the better of themselves. The one thing that doesn’t go out of fashion is confidence. That’s the spirit, ladies !

So you see Madonna, no matter how many stumbles you take, you will always be the Queen of Pop and Reinvention. And if you want company, there are plenty who have their own stumbling stories to tell. You won’t be down for long.

So long,  until the next celebrity stumble.
