Porn has often been a taboo in multiple parts of the world but USA celebrates porn or at least acknowledges the top stars in porn by awarding them the AVN Awards; otherwise conveniently known as the “Oscars of porn” by multiple sources.
The idea is simple, here. The more popular you are, the more chances you have of winning an award in any of the 100+ categories which these awards constitute of.
AVN Awards aren’t new, folks. They’ve been in existence since February 1984 and are regularly held every year.
Mostly, the AVN Awards are held every year in the month of January along with the annual AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, where people get to meet and greet their favorite stars.
The awards are organized by AVN (Adult Video News) magazine and primarily recognize American porn movies.
The awards are generally held along with the expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Furthermore, just like all awards, AVN Awards also boast of an AVN Hall Of Fame, where the top stars and people behind the camera are inducted into the hall of fame for their contributions to American pornographic industry.
The only catch is that people who’ve achieved immense success are awarded but they have to be in the industry for a minimum period of 10 years to be eligible for the hall of fame induction.
Not only do these awards provide recognition, it’s often viewed that winners of these awards often get better projects, after being awarded, more lucrative contracts from bigger brands.
Coming to the categories, as stated, there are over 100 categories ranging from the types of scenes, gender of performers, type of sexual acts in a particular scene, screenplay, parody or the directors of the scenes who are awarded at AVN Awards.
The most recent edition of AVN Awards in 2017 saw director Axel Braun’s parody porn movie of “Suicide Squad” won 9 awards; the most for any movie in 2017 and saw the most coveted award of Female Performer Of The Year go to Kleio Velentein.
It also saw one of the most famous performers Monique Alexander get inducted into the hall of fame along with multiple other stars, directors and more people from the internet porn industry.

Coming to voting, it’s usually simple and has fans vote on the AVN Awards website for most categories but the awards have recently come under scrutiny for cherry-picking favorites to boost chances for certain celebs and brands.
Although there is no concrete evidence to this claim, the news folks don’t essentially think twice before making a story out of nothing.
Coming to records, only Tori Black holds the distinction of winning the Female Performer Of The Year Award twice and that too, on consecutive occasions.
As of 2017, Adriana Chechik is the reigning winner.
Most of us in India don’t often look at porn as a business with such extravagance and we regard it low as compared to the mainstream cinema but it’s rather empowering to see that people in other countries have accepted it as a norm and are rather celebratory about it.
But hey, as long as we get to see our favorite stars in “action”, I think it’s all smooth sailing. Haha!
