IIT or the Indian Institute of Technology is a government engineering college that is basically the creme de la creme of all engineering colleges.

Studying in an IIT is the dream which a literal ton of Indian kids pursue but only a few get. Many settle for great Non-IITs and others attend tier-2 and tier-3 colleges.

Not studying in an IIT after saying for two years that you are preparing for it is a bit hard on people. The romanticised idea of getting into an IIT and having a “sorted” life is defeated by the harsh reality that is engineering in India.
