Homeless Girl Inspires Ed Sheeran’s This Song While Racism Inspired Michael Jackson

We all hear songs to connect ourselves to, but there are certain lyrics that open our eyes and connect us to the world. Words are mightier than a sword, then words set in a tune are worthier than a thousand more swords. Living in a prejudiced world I’m happy to see songs like these can alter minds of hypocrites like me.

These songs weren’t made to get hits on YouTube but written so that these voices can speak their mind to this society and that is why it would be a shame if you miss them! Lyrics in songs aren’t always about rap music and a string of senseless lyrics, sometimes they have meanings worth pondering about and stories behind them worth knowing.

It’s time to highlight those messages hidden away in these lyrical plays!

Let’s hit it off with…

Flawless

It’s one of the most hard hit and experimental track amongst Beyonce’s box of songs. She woke up one morning, angry at the world and took it out through her song. BOW DOWN BI*CHES – if people like it great but if they don’t then don’t! Nothing made her stop from being opinionated and that is why she is top on my list.

The words worth a thousand speeches-

We teach girls to shrink themselves
To make themselves smaller
We say to girls,
“You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man.”

Asking those stereotypical idiots to bow down at the greatness women can achieve, I for one bow down at her for these mind boggling lyrics because it made me feel strong.

(speech adaptations in the song was from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie)

Born This Way

This one is amongst the many songs in Lady Gaga’s Catalogue that has raised a voice against a social issue. It took her just 10 minutes to write that song, well when you’re speaking your heart out words just flow, don’t they?

“No matter gay, straight or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to survive”

And it took me just 5 minutes to receive her message, but I wonder how long it will take for our society!

The A Team

It’s one of Ed Sheeran’s earlier tracks that could blow anyone’s mind with its subtle tone and in depth lyrics.

“And they say
She’s in the Class A Team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since 18

The worst things in life come free to us.”

Talking about the struggles of street sex workers, prostitution, and drugs, Ed Sheeran writes a song inspired from Angel, a girl he met while working at the crisis homeless shelter. To think that such people do exist opened up my eyes and would hopefully open up yours too!

Black or White

The name speaks volumes on its own. Michael Jackson definitely made the world ponder along with him on what grounds racism was built on.

“Boy, is that girl with you?
Yes, we’re one and the same
Now, I believe in miracles
And a miracle has happened tonight

But, if you’re thinking about my baby
It don’t matter if you’re black or white.”

Why would we discriminate or categorize anyone on their color?

Can you believe it people actually tried to talk Michael Jackson from doing this song because it might affect his status? In a world of hypocrisy and stardom, I respect him for not being a part of it!

Beautiful

What is more important than self-motivation? A song for those who have faced bullying it’s time to look up and see your inner self and respect who you truly are.

“Now and then I get insecure from all the pain
I’m so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can’t bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way.”

Christina Aguilera recalls the abuse inflicted on her by her own father, and that’s what makes this song heart touching. If she can stand tall and brave after that then why can’t we?

Amongst living stereotypes let’s give a hats-off to those artists and singers who had a voice and an opinion worth making people hear through means that they are best known for.
