Back in Time is ED’s newspaper type column that reports an incident from the past as though it has happened just yesterday. It allows the reader to re-live it several years later, on the date it had occurred.
For this incident, we go back in time to 2004.
2004, February 4: Known for his incredible programming hacks and techniques, Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg just launched a social networking website which enables people to share and interact with people online in an exciting yet unusual manner. With the help of his friend Eduardo Saverin who served as the very first investor for “thefacebook.com”, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, the site was kicked off exclusively for Harvard students.
The website named as “thefacebook.com” is a creation that came directly from Mark’s dorm room. It has already taken the University by storm. Generating buzz throughout the city and unleashing never seen before traffic on the Harvard internet connections, Mark has got himself in some grave trouble from the University administration once again. It would be interesting to see what this young entrepreneur has to show for, now that the website has amassed a super 1,200 registrations within 24 hours of its launch
Facebook became the largest social networking website in the world
Mark Zuckerberg’s revolutionary idea to generate a networking website that would enable people to share whatever they wanted was an instant hit. The registrations were no longer limited to Harvard students but were expanded to Stanford, Columbia and Yale. Soon after Facebook’s kickoff, Mark dropped out of Harvard, moved to Silicon Valley and was offered great deals by investors. The start of Facebook was and still is a controversial topic. Yet, the site maintains its crown as the website with the largest number of monthly active users.
How many people use Facebook as of 2016?
Facebook as of January 2016 has 1.591 billion users active monthly. Isn’t that something?
From a college dorm room to almost every household in the world, Facebook made its way brilliantly into our lives. While Mark Zuckerberg may have been a nerdy, shy kid in his high school years but to us, he is a pioneer entrepreneur and philanthropist. Imagine a life without Facebook? Sure seems kind of dull to me. Which is why, we congratulate Mark Zuckerberg and all the people behind Facebook on their 12 years of successful run as the largest social media networking website on the planet.
