Humanities vs Engineering: How Your Engineer Friends Treat You For Taking Up Economics

-

By Suryansh Upmanyu

For 9 years, I went to a school which had IIT Delhi in its neighbourhood (that too just across the road). For 9 years, my friends and I gazed at that campus in pure awe.  For 9 years we had the dream of becoming engineers firmly ingrained in our minds.

And then I went over to the ‘other side’.

The result: I am an economics student in a friend circle full of engineers. Being the faithful friends that they are, they constantly remind me of my ‘’mistake’’ (what good are friends who don’t correct each other?)

In this article I am going to highlight the ‘special’ treatment I get from my friends, some salient features of which are:

  1. You took humanities = You are dumb: You know that your friends are constantly judging you when you have to listen to comments like this-

Come on guys! Not all artsies work in McDonald’s!

2. Getting different perspectives on simple concepts:

What I Think What They Think
Product Differentiation The same product is found in a lot of varieties d/dx[f(x)g(x)] = f’(x)g(x) + f(x)g’(x)
Description of a Free Kick Oh, Ronaldo is such a player!

He hits the ball with so much flair.

He hits the ball

Over the wall

And the goalkeeper is left in despair.

Ronaldo hit the ball with an initial velocity of 6m/s. it followed the trajectory of 10y= x2+70 with a little Magnus effect thrown in before settling into the bottom corner.

Don’t worry if you cannot understand them. You are probably a humanities student. (Or maybe you are a dumb science student. Then you need to worry.)

4. Being subject to outright discrimination: You know that you are being treated differently only because of your course when you see this –

5. Dinner time talks with parents: “Today Vandana Aunty was saying – See Mrs. Dubey, I still feel that your son has made a wrong choice. There is still time. Save him! – Why couldn’t you become an engineer just like your friends?”

And it goes on and on and on. But I don’t care. I know that I made the right choice. And even though I don’t really care who is superior to whom, there are two points which really make me glad that I didn’t take up engineering:

1. We have a life: Tests, exams, quizzes, practicals, projects and then some more tests. That is all I get to hear about when I talk to my friends. Did I mention mid-sems?

2. Depressing sex ratio: This one is hilarious. Almost all my friends have stated this as the source of all their despair. “Yaar branch to mil gayi, lekin tumhari bhabhi nahi mil paa rahi hain!” Take it easy guys, because there is a way out of this too:

Enough of the potshots for now. I know these inter-stream feuds will continue in the future. But where is the fun without them? And at the end of the day, no matter how much fun we make of each other, there is one thing I want you to know.

I love you guys.
