Digital Nomad On A Mission: Blue Ocean Life CEO Aims To Promote Healthier Entrepreneurship

-

Startup Fortune, May 13, 2020 – What happens when fashion, digital nomadism, and mental-health advocacy come together? You get The Blue Ocean Life Co.

Mike Coughlin, the company’s founder, is no stranger to difficulties with mental health, and he hopes to impart inspiration on other entrepreneurs who are struggling to find work life balance, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coughlin lost his older brother at a young age and went on to endure many other stressful situations throughout the first part of his life. By spending time on the beaches of Cape Cod during periods of stress and anxiety, Coughlin realized that there’s more to life than work.

Through these experiences, the idea for Blue Ocean Life was born.

Blue Ocean Life is a clothing line with a social mission. The brand’s mission is to spread mental health awareness, and encourage entrepreneurs to spend time away from the office (and technology) to boost their mental well being.

A Healthier Way of Life: Taking Breaks From Technology

With most of society still on some form of lockdown, it might seem impossible to take a break from your phone or computer, especially if you’re working from home.

Coughlin offers this advice to entrepreneurs who are struggling to break away from technology, “It is certainly very challenging to maintain a healthy mentality during times of crisis or uncertainty. It’s mainly because our ‘always on,’ 24/7 news and social media world is fueling the frenzy, so that we can hardly escape it.”

Getting closer to nature and taking a break from the daily grind can be life changing, and there’s never been a better time to do that than right now. Research indicates that getting closer to nature has a real impact on mental, emotional and physical well being. Being in nature can also be a good way to implement a mindfulness practice.

Coughlin believes people can overcome their mental-health struggles and find happiness even in the chaotic modern world. Sometimes, all it takes is a little fun in the sun, and a short break from your phone.
