Delhi University is known for its high standards in teaching students and is also extremely popular nationwide. The university is also known for its sky-high cutoffs.

Speculations have been made since long that the admission process of the Delhi University would change from the academic cutoffs to now having entrance exams for both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s courses.

Earlier also in 2017, Delhi University tried to attempt this but due to short-term planning, this proposal could not be executed.

But from this academic year (2019-2020) there are high chances that only scoring high marks in your boards might not be enough as students would also have to appear for an entrance exam.

DU Vice Chancellor told TOI,

“The admission committee is going to take up the matter of entrance exams with regard to the admission process of 2019-20. The committee is an independent panel that has education experts, college principals and faculty as members.”

The details of these exams are still not out but the proposal is being discussed thoroughly. A lot of members of the committee have also resisted this proposal.

The panel is considering the possibility to outsource the entrances to National Testing Agency which has earlier held national exams like NET and JEE from CBSE. However not a lot of panel members are up for this outsourcing as they do not want to involve any private agency.

The admission process for 2019 is still not open and the committee will soon be out with their decision.

Earlier also the University fizzled out with the implementation of the proposal but this time the panel seems to back it with a lot of planning. In case of any notifications the official website du.ac.in is the go-to stop for all students.

Speculatively, the system is going to give equal weightage to both the tiers- the cutoffs and the entrance exams which is a catch for the students.

Will DU Get More Generous?

As of now, DU conducts entrance exams for only 9 bachelor’s and master’s courses. Majority of the students get into the colleges through their class 12th board marks.

DU grading system has already received a huge backlash because of its unfair standards.

Students hailing from different boards like regional boards, CBSE, ISC and many more have different schemes of marking which makes it an unfair comparison under one single bar for all these students.

Delhi University comprises of prestigious colleges like Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Shri Ram College for Commerce, Hindu College, Hansraj, Gargi and many more. These top ranking institutes in the country have had high cut-offs going up to 99.9% only making the aspirant’s life a struggle.

It’s only fair to have a system which tests the knowledge of the student and then admits them into the institution instead of making them run in a rat race for scoring high marks in their boards.

This rat race leads to the students resorting to unfair practises like cheating, leaking papers and the list goes on. This madness for scoring marks has lead to a business where one can buy grades and seats, assuring them of a bright career ahead.

Interestingly this January we also have a movie releasing on this very issue. “Cheat India” starring Emraan Hashmi seems to be talking about this madness of entrances, exams, marks, cut offs, and the cheating and dishonest practices associated with this education world.

With the admission season of DU now gaining heat and the beginning of board exams the timing of the movie seems super apt.

Let’s see what all it reveals.

Can’t wait to watch it!
